Exhibition of works by the nominated artists from 1 October 2010 – 23 January 2011
On the occasion of the NAM JUNE PAIK AWARD museum kunst palast in collaboration with the Art Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia is presenting an exhibition of works by the artists nominated for this year’s award. The exhibition runs from 1 October 2010 to 23 January 2011. In parallel, from 11 September until 21 November 2010 and forming part of the Quadriennale 2010, the museum is staging a major retrospective of the Korean artist Nam June Paik (1932-2006), whose outstanding artistic work is acknowledged in the title of the award founded by the Art Foundation NRW in 2002.
The Nam June Paik Award, which this year will be granted for the fifth time, aims to bring together, in a single exhibition, young artists whose works exhibit a connection to Nam June Paik’s oeuvre. A winner will then be chosen for the Media Art Prize, worth 25,000 Euro.
The pool of artists nominated for the PAIK AWARD 2010 matches the international flavour of this year's panel of experts convened under the chairmanship of Udo Kittelmann (Berlin) and also including Solange Farkas (São Paulo), Antonio Muntadas (Barcelona/New York), Miklós Peternák (Budapest) and Yukiko Shikata (Tokyo): The shortlist includes the Japanese Artist Group 4nchor5 la6 (Tokyo) and Ei Wada a.k.a. Crab Feet, also from Tokyo; the Berlin-based artist Hajnal Németh; Chelpa Ferro, a group of Brazilian artists from São Paulo; Istanbul-based Ali Kazma; Rosa Barba, who has lived and worked in Cologne for many years, as well as Eike, who works in Budapest, and Ignas Krunglevicius, who works in Oslo, Norway.
Ultimately the task of the prize jury - consisting of David Link, Professor of Experimental Technologies in the Context of Art at Leipzig Academy of Visual Arts, Siegfried Zielinski, Professor of Media Theory at Berlin University of the Arts, the artist and professor Katharina Sieverding, as well as Beat Wismer, General Director of museum kunst palast, Düsseldorf - is to appraise the works of the young media artists exhibited under Thibaut de Ruyter's curatorship at museum kunst palast and to reach their verdict.
In addition to the 25,000 Euro Media Art Award, the Art Foundation NRW will award a grant worth 15,000 Euro to go to a young artist from the region of North Rhine-Westphalia.
As well as presenting the artists nominated for the NAM JUNE PAIK Award, the exhibition will show the latest works of the winners of the Paik Award 2008, Adriane Wachholz and Thorsten Hallscheidt.
The award ceremony will be integrated into the exhibition opening on 30 September 2010 at 7 pm in the Robert-Schumann-Saal.
