About the Nam June Paik Award – International Media Art Award of the Arts Foundation NRW
Idea and conception: Regina Wyrwoll

Since 2002 the Kunststiftung NRW (Arts Foundation of North Rhine-Westphalia) has presented a bi-annual award for media art:
- Five international experts nominate up to eight international artists for an exhibition of at least six weeks, from which a jury selects a winner to receive a prize of € 25,000. The same jury also awards a newcomer prize of € 15,000 to a young artist from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia - Both the exhibition and the award presentation are carried out in cooperation with an art institution in NRW
The Nam June Paik Award is not aimed at design or other applied practices, but is concentrated on art in the narrow sense. The prizes may be awarded in various artistic disciplines, however, as long as the use of electronic/digital media is an integral part of the work. The guiding principle for the selection of artists and presentations is a relationship to the varied output of the world-renowned artist Nam June Paik, who lived for 19 years in North Rhine-Westphalia, where he received much stimulus for his work. Decisive to the selection of the exhibition venue is its substantive coherency to, or indeed discrepancy from, the electronic/digital arts. In 2010 the Stiftung museum kunst palast in Düsseldorf is host and cooperating partner for the exhibition and award presentation.
