Shiho Fukuhara (J) received her BA(Hons) in Fine Art from the Central
Saint Martins College of Art in London and has background in
installation, sculpture, video and net-based art. Georg Tremmel (AT) was
given his formal training in 'Visual Media Art' at Vienna's University
for Applied Art by Peter Weibel and Karel Dudesek. His work focused
mainly on the coding and decoding of media surfaces and media-
technological dispositives.
Shiho and Georg met during their MA studies in Interaction Design (now:
'Design Interactions') at the Royal College of Art in London, discovered
a shared interest and have been collaborating on various projects since.
Shiho participated in the year-long Le Pavilion Artist-in-Residence
program of Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2004. That year they also won the
London Science Museum's 'Product of the Future' Award, the NESTA
(National Endowment for Science, Technology and Art) Graduate Pioneer
Award, the grand prize at the international Swiss Media Art festival
VIPER, and the second prize at the Cambridge, UK, 'Biology in Business -
Pitch your Idea' competition.
Following that, their focus shifted away from Europe and towards Japan
with Residencies at IAMAS (Institute for the Advancement of Media Art
and Science) in Gifu, and with an Atelier-Stipend by Austrian Government
in Fujino.
In 2008 they were selected as Artists-in-Residence during the ISEA
(International Symposium on Electronic Arts) 2008 exhibition and
conference in Singapore, working in collaboration with the NUS (National
University of Singapore) on the metaphysical and social interactions of
the theme-complex Water.
To advance their research-based approach, they have formed the BCL, an
artistic research framework and open collaboration platform dedicated to
exploring and critically investigating the interfaces and predetermined
breaking points between Art, Science, Design, Technology and Society.
